Do I need a 24-70 f/2.8 if I already own three fast primes?
35mm, 50mm and 85mm, all f/1.8. Everyone tells me the zoom is essential for events but I do not want to spend the money if the primes cover it.

For events, yes — not for image quality, for the lens changes you will not be making while something happens. At a wedding the zoom is a workflow tool, not an optical upgrade.
For street, no. Keep the primes.
I've been shooting with Panasonic for most of my work this year. The handling and optical sharpness make a huge difference out in the field.
I had a similar issue when I started out. Setting custom white balance and using a lightweight travel tripod made a noticeable improvement in my overall image sharpness.
